ABOUT 19 Jan 2020
Great British Racing Drivers Photographic Exhibition, now open at the new £20M Silverstone Experience.
Foreword by the Duke of Richmond.
A major photographic exhibition, celebrating more than 100 of Britain’s most iconic and inspirational drivers, past, present and future. Great British Racing Drivers is a unique collection of new photographs of drivers from karting to F1 in settings and locations that link to their motorsport story or illustrate their personalities away from the track.
I am honoured that Great British Racing Drivers is the very first visiting exhibition to be featured at the brand new £20 million Silverstone Experience, placing the project at the the very centre of British and global motorsport.
In the last five years, I’ve travelled over 16,000 miles, capturing more than 100 drivers, starting with ‘the greatest driver never to have won the world championship’ the legend that is Sir Stirling Moss, closely followed by the late, great John Surtees and Sir Jackie Stewart. Not bad for starters and what a fantastic time my partner in crime, Paul and I have had with them.
Sir Stirling was an absolute hoot, telling us about when he and Lady Moss were driving the Mille Miglia route. ‘I'd got into a good rhythm around the snowy, twisty mountain roads. I was about to over take, when all of a sudden the steering went light and the wheel came off in my hands.’ Listening on with amazement, I asked ‘What on earth happened ? With a chuckle, he replied casually ’Luckily the car veered into the snow bank and not over the edge. There was no damage to the car just snow on the snout, I reattached the wheel we were on our way again'
John Surtees, who had just been zooming up and down his drive in a Ferrari 158, freshly delivered for Festival of Speed preparation when we arrived, made us tea when we’d finished. We sat and chatted in his kitchen for over an hour about all sorts of things - could have stayed there all day, absolutely fascinating.
Sir Jackie loves jam, so I took him some of my homemade damson and plum jams. He promptly hung the bag, along with our coats, on what must be the world’s most expensive hook. The rear wing of Mark Webber’s British Grand Prix winning Redbull !
Photographing these legends of motorsport has been an absolute privilege and pleasure. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed meeting and getting to know the drivers. They’ve all been great company, good fun, highly entertaining and extremely generous with their time. The drivers have shown great support for the project, they are all delighted about the creation of this unique catalogue and are excited to hear that the photographs will be exhibited at such a major new venue.
It’s not only the drivers who have been very helpful and supportive. The ongoing support and assistance from the BRDC and MSUK has been invaluable, as has the Duke's exceptional generosity in facilitating the Goodwood Estate as a location throughout the project.
I’m thrilled that the public will now be able to see these images at The Silverstone Experience and hope that the exhibition can become the start of an archive for motorsport fans and the general public to enjoy. Who knows, it may even inspire a future driver or two.
I am delighted to announce that GBRD will be supporting Race Against Dementia by donating 10% of all print sales.
I hope you will enjoy the exhibition as much as I have creating it.
